Exeter has 5,000 council houses, with another 4,400 units of social housing managed by other providers. The most recently published figures show more than 3,000 households in the city on the housing waiting list.

The few flats and houses that become available are highly sought after. People on the waiting list can ‘bid’ on properties via the website Devon Home Choice which lists available properties belonging to local authorities and housing associations.

On July 1, 2017, there were 12 affordable homes available across the city. One, a house in Laburnum Road, attracted more than 100 bids.

There were no homes available for affordable rent in Topsham. The nearest was a house in Countess Wear, which had attracted 66 bids just a few days after being listed.

In January 2015 there were 2,150 households on the city’s waiting list. By April 2017 that number had hit 3,187.

Official homelessness figures for the city, meanwhile, doubled between the years 2010 and 2016.
